3 Factors You Should Consider When Choosing A Martial Arts Gym!

Updated: Jul 9, 2024

Beyond the obvious factors of proximity and cost, there are other key factors to consider when choosing the right martial arts gym for your training. Here are 4 factors you need to keep in mind while choosing an MMA gym:-

1. Coaches

A boy comes to me with a spark of interest, I feed the spark and it becomes a flame. I feed the flame and it becomes a fire. I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze. - Cus D'AMato

Isn't this the most important thing to consider when choosing an MMA gym? A student-coach relationship is almost sacred to this sport! We have all heard about the inspiring yet emotional stories of Cus D'AMato and Mike Tyson, haven’t we? Therefore, it is crucial that you talk to the instructors, ask them questions, and pick their brains during trial classes. It is imperative that you feel inherently respectful towards your instructors and their journeys so that you can trust them fully during training. Notice how the instructors react to questions asked to them. Are they rude, exhibiting an all-knowing God complex?Or are they compassionate, listening, and guiding their athletes more holistically? Do they lead with authority or nurture each individual? These are essential questions that you must consider before committing to an MMA gym.

A good coach can set up a solid foundation for you imparting life long lessons that would go way beyond martial arts. On the other hand, a bad and arrogant coach can make you spiteful towards MMA as a sport for the rest of your life. Choose wisely! Check our roster of coaches at London Fight Academy here.

2. Community

Oh, lonely heart, everyone longs to belong and feel accepted in a community! A true sense of brotherhood is one of the major aspects of training at a martial arts gym. Some of the most valuable relationships are formed while people are going for each other’s throats! A good group of people at the gym will encourage you to learn, stay committed, and skyrocket your growth in MMA. Having supportive sparring partners who aim to uplift each other and grow, rather than cause harm, is important to consider before joining a martial arts gym. Notice how people behave with each other in the gym. Do they respect one another? Are they humble or arrogant? Do the people seem like those you could possibly hang out with outside the gym? Carefully observe, like a hawk, as this is crucial before you settle on an MMA gym.

Approaching a gym with the idea of joining a community rather than solely focusing on martial arts can be a better perspective, one that will help you select a good gym and stay committed for a longer time. Here at London Fight Academy, community building is one of our top priorities, and we have a vibrant community of athletes at our facility. We focus on bringing people together and fostering new long-standing relationships, and many of our members even spend time outside the gym. Check out our Instagram & Facebook.

3. Training Facility

The bread and butter of the gym, the facility itself is the most important factor to consider before joining an MMA gym! Well equipped with everything you need, like a cage or ring, grappling mats, heavy bags, pads, gloves, and other MMA gear, your gym needs to have gear that is up to date, well maintained, clean, and not subjected to extreme wear and tear. High-quality

martial arts gear that can withstand all the punches, kicks, and rolls will ensure your safety while training. So, make sure that you check their gear in your trial class. Clean and organized with proper ventilation, the gym has to appear professional. A big indication of their credibility, if they don’t look professional, most likely their services aren’t professional either! Choose wisely and trust your instincts when you visit the gym.

We strongly advise you to choose wisely, not cut petty corners, and invest wholeheartedly in selecting the perfect MMA gym for you!
